The center hopes to develop the latest sequencing technologies to advance top-tier marine genomic research in Taiwan. By cultivating talent in marine genomics and data analysis, we aim to help sustain Taiwan's competitiveness in ocean research, strengthen cross-disciplinary domestic and international collaborations, and maximize the translation of genomic data into technology or products for the industry.
moreThis center was established in 2023 by Professors Kao-Ping Chiang and Dr. Sen-Lin Tang, with a mission focused on service, education, and research. Primarily funded by the National Science and Technology Council of Taiwan, the center's objective is to provide a genome analysis platform and encourage the development of bioinformatics researchers while furthering the progress of marine genome research in Taiwan.
Aligned with the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science's primary goal of preserving marine ecosystems (Sustainable Development Goals, SDG14), it is essential to understand marine biological resources and their diversity. Marine genomes are considered vital resources for the ocean economy and are closely linked to human life and the environment. As a result, marine genome research is a critical foundation for promoting Taiwan's marine economic development and ecological research, providing essential information for managing marine ecosystems.
Currently, there is no dedicated research organization for marine genomics and bioinformatics analysis in Taiwan. The National Taiwan Ocean University boasts a comprehensive range of research teams and specialized laboratories, making it the ideal location to house the Marine Genome Research Institute. The newly established Taiwan Ocean Genome Center will offer technical guidance, share resources, and facilitate the growth of marine genomics research in Taiwan. Additionally, the Center will collaborate with domestic and international institutions to enhance marine biodiversity research, ultimately contributing to marine ecosystem protection and sustainable development.
